At the Newark History Society’s next program, Dr. Karolina Dos Santos will discuss “Wards of Action: Black Women’s Vision for a New Ark, 1966-1970.”
In her talk, Dr. Dos Santos will focus on the contributions of Black women in Newark’s transition from “City of Industry” to “Chocolate City,” including Louise Epperson’s efforts to contest the construction of the Medical School, Earlene Jackson Provitt’s mobilization of her neighborhood to participate in the Newark Area Planning Association (NAPA), and Ruth McClain’s role in organizing the Black and Puerto Rican Convention of 1969.
A native Newarker, Dr. Dos Santos was educated at Harvard, served as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Dominican Republic, and earned her PhD at Brown University. Her doctoral research explored how Black grassroots leaders in Newark used their reactions to racial violence to structure national mobilizations for the abolition of slavery from 1840 to 1850, antilynching legislation from 1922 to 1930, and resistance to urban renewal from 1966 to 1980. She has taught at both NYU and Kean University. https://karolinadossantos.com/
